Our role in the AARC project is to undertake genetic analysis of trout (Salmo trutta) within the project area. Specifically, we will be undertaking genetic analysis of populations of resident brown trout and anadromous sea trout for the purposes of fisheries management and conservation.

Our genetic analysis uses a technique called microsatellite analysis, which allow us to quantify gene flow between populations, effective population size (effective number of breeders) and to assign fish caught at sea and in estuaries to their natal river of origin; such techniques offer a powerful, efficient and cost effective alternative to traditional fisheries management methods, such as tagging, for management and conservation.
